coast. This change of plans was serious for the pirates
as the sea was very rough and rocky at this point and it
would be most difficult to effect a landing.
It appears that the movement of the Tean aroused
the suspections of the Officers at Sam Mun Customs Station
who communicated their reason for suspicion to the Customs

Cruiser "Yeung Shing". When the Yeung Shing came in sight
the pirates were already in two of the ship's Boats with
their hostages, loot including firearms (one shot gun
left on ship, but no ammunition) and the Chief and 2nd
Officers, visibility was very bad owing to heavy rain
storm.
The occupants of the Pirates Boats were obliged
to swim with the aid of life buoys as the Boats could not
get near the shore owing to rough sea and the rocky nature
of the coast.
Before leaving the Boats the Pirate Chief gave
instructions that the 2nd Officer was to be shot (presuma-
bly because his action when the Piracy broke out resulted
in the death of the Chief Pirate's brother).
The 2nd Officer was left on the Boat which was
being smashed against the rocks. One pirate took delibe-
rate aim and fired at the Officer, who took to the water
and swam away, he fired several shots, none of which took
effect and the Officer escaped by getting a rock between
him and the pirate.
The pirates then hurried over high hills with
their hostages and loot.
The Customs Cruiser landed some armed men who
pursued the pirates so hotly that they were forced to
abandon their prisoners and some of the loot. The
prisoners, two ship's officers and some property were
